Verse 2.20

From Chapter 2 — The Yoga of Knowledge

Original text

न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः। अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे॥

Translation

“It is not born, nor does it ever die; having been, it does not cease to be. Unborn, constant, enduring, ancient — it is not slain when the body is slain.”

Source — Bhagavad Gītā 2.20 (traditional Sanskrit text). English rendering by Frenly Divine — a working translation, not an authoritative one.

Understand

What it is saying

Explanation — written by Frenly Divine, not scripture

Krishna answers grief by asking what it is that actually ends. The verse separates the enduring self from the body that changes and dies.

Why it matters

It reframes loss: not as a denial of grief, but as a question about what we assume we are.
